We received an Oshima tsumugi featuring a beautiful pattern of kikko and flowers from our client. We tailored this traditional kimono, with its dignified presence, into a light and everyday Cha button dress carrying forward the feelings poured into the kimono so it can be enjoyed in a new form.
Design decisions
We chose a simple A-line silhouette that can also be worn as a light outer layer, making the most of the dense, continuous pattern and comfortable feel of Oshima tsumugi. By making it a front-opening design, it can be worn not only as a dress but also as a light coat. The lightness and comfort of Oshima tsumugi can be fully appreciated, and the clean neckline adds a modern lightness to the heavy presence of the pattern.
Fabric and tailoring
The lightness and unique crispness characteristic of Oshima tsumugi pair wonderfully with the beautiful A-line silhouette. To make the most of these fabric qualities, we tailored it with a relaxed fit that does not cling to the body lines, using a full kimono length of fabric. Therefore, we paid meticulous attention to cutting, arranging the kikko patterns to create an elegant appearance.
The finished piece
Wearing it simply as a single piece creates a dress style with a soft silhouette. Adding the matching fabric belt makes it perfect for slightly formal dinners or the theater. Wearing it open over trousers creates a refined, casual look. Each time you slip your arms into it, you will feel the lightness of silk, making daily styling even more enjoyable.
