Nothing extraordinary, just a way of being that unfolds without thought.
Yet in these gentle, refined customs, lies a profound depth.

    Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple nestles in the quiet embrace of Mount Agung in eastern Bali. As the mother temple of Balinese Hinduism, it has stood as the spiritual origin for its people since the 8th to 10th centuries, receiving the quiet prayers of pilgrims through the ages.

To step into this sanctuary is to pause and compose oneself. Men wear the traditional white udeng headcloth, while all wrap a sarong with a waist sash. In this quiet act of adorning oneself begins a solemn prayer.

    The Home Temple: Sanggah

Wandering through the rural landscape of Bakas, Bali, we kept coming across grand structures that looked just like magnificent temples. Until a local explained it to us, I assumed they were dedicated public facilities. When we learned that these were actually family shrines called Sanggah, found in every home, the revelation was so astonishing that I could barely process it at first.

Riding a motorbike through the Balinese breeze, I encountered this scene again and again: women gracefully making their way, balancing Sokan woven baskets on their heads. Blending seamlessly into Bali’s vibrant scenery, they offer a glimpse into island life.

    The Prayer Box

Every morning begins with the opening of a Sokan, a small woven bamboo box. Inside rests the Canang—vibrant, colorful flowers thoughtfully arranged on palm leaves. For the Balinese, prayer is not a rare or formal occasion. Gathering seasonal blossoms, lighting incense, and giving thanks for the new day is a way of life as natural and precious as breathing itself. In the quiet countryside of Bali, I witnessed the true depth and richness of everyday living.

    An 18-Month Blessing Ceremony

    An 18-Month Blessing Ceremony

While riding our motorbike, we were drawn to the lively scene of women wrapped in sarongs, gracefully balancing Sokan baskets on their heads. Following their cheerful procession brought us to a family home, where neighbors had gathered in high spirits, preparing for a son’s "18-month ceremony" the following day. Despite being unannounced guests, we were warmly invited inside with the openhearted smiles of the local community.

Exchanging friendly words as they shared their love for Japan, we were treated to a lavish feast centered around Babi Guling (traditional roast pig). Far from a solemn affair, we quickly found ourselves enveloped in the warm smiles, vibrant energy, and welcoming atmosphere of the celebration.
