We received a homongi (a semi-formal kimono) in an elegant pale purple, adorned with charming karako children and flowering branches. Preserving the gentle, story-like atmosphere of the kimono, we tailored it into a contemporary piece to be enjoyed as Tanmono dress.
Design decisions
The eba pattern features floral branches flowing from the shoulders to the hem, with playful karako children near the lower edge. We paid careful attention to the placement of the pattern so as not to disrupt this compositional beauty. The charming karako are gathered near the hem to make them the focal point, while the upper body features a clean and simple design. A refined V-neck enhances the pale purple hue, creating an elegant silhouette.
Fabric and tailoring
Our primary focus was to highlight the supple and beautiful sheen inherent in this kimono fabric. We tailored the piece using a relaxed pattern, allowing the natural drape of the fabric to create soft folds across the bodice. A matching fabric belt at the waist allows for subtle changes in silhouette. The goal was a lightweight and comfortable wear while retaining the distinct character of the kimono.
The finished piece
Simply slipping this on creates an elegant and refined look, perfect for visits to art museums or dining with loved ones on special occasions. With every movement, the karako at the hem gently appear, bringing warmth to those around you. It is a piece that carries the story of the kimono, brightening a new day with grace.
