The client brought in a komon (a kimono with a small, repeating pattern) featuring colorful small flowers set against a vibrant red ground. We tailored this striking piece into a Tsuki sleeveless dress known for its relaxed and beautiful silhouette. The classic appeal of the kimono pattern is brought into daily life through a contemporary design.
Design decisions
To make the most of the komon pattern, which features a variety of colors on a red base, we proposed a simple A-line Tsuki sleeveless dress. The diagonally flowing pattern creates a clean and refined impression. The elegant V-neckline accentuates the neck, while the gently flared hem produces a silhouette that is both graceful and easy to move in.
Fabric and tailoring
The supple and fluid fabric creates a beautiful drape when used generously in a dress, as can be seen in the soft texture captured in the photographs. Although the small patterns are densely arranged, the fabric showed no signs of fading and appears to have been kept in excellent condition. Making use of these qualities, we proposed a simple A-line silhouette that does not cling to the body.
The finished piece
Worn simply on its own, it creates a look that is both striking and refined. It is well-suited for lunches with friends, theater visits, or slightly special occasions. The hem sways lightly with every movement, allowing the delicate komon pattern to subtly change its expression. This Tsuki sleeveless dress carries the memories of its time as a kimono while weaving a new story.
