The daruma is a traditional craft, and this special one is made by Fujito, an urushi lacquer master whose work includes items for the Imperial Household. It is a daruma coated in genuine urushi by time-honored methods.

Urushi lacquering is one of the traditional techniques. Here it is applied over the Koshigaya daruma, itself a folk craft with a long history. The pairing of tradition upon tradition looks newly beautiful — a single, simply finished color that brings out the sculptural form of the Koshigaya daruma. Please enjoy this lacquered daruma.

Urushi lacquer master / mikoshi (portable shrine) craftsman — Shinji Fujito
Born in Hanakawado, Asakusa, Tokyo; the 19th-generation urushi master of the Fujito house, which carries 500 years of history. He worked on mikoshi making and repair at the Asako Mikoshi workshop in Gyōtoku, Ichikawa, Chiba (1986–1994). A master of both urushi lacquer and mikoshi.
