We remade a striking black-and-white furisode (a long-sleeved formal kimono worn on celebratory occasions) into a sophisticated Shoulder gathered dress. Making the most of its bold composition and scattering cherry blossoms, we tailored it into a modern and elegant piece. We carefully preserved its memory as a kimono while shaping it into a garment that shines in new settings.
Design decisions
Because the mood changes significantly depending on whether the black or white fabric takes center stage, we chose the black fabric as the main base for a chic impression. The gathers at the shoulders create a soft drape, and the V-neck gives a clean look around the face. The gold-leaf cherry blossom pattern placed along the hem peeks out gracefully with every step. The matching belt is crafted from the white section to serve as a subtle waist accent.
Fabric and tailoring
The supple fabric with its moderate sheen conveys the distinct dignity of a furisode. The photographs also capture the beautiful drape of the material, which accentuates the elegant silhouette of the Shoulder gathered dress. The vivid gold leaf and delicate patterns remain in excellent condition, and we kept the tailoring simple to highlight this high-quality texture. While the high artistry of the furisode requires some care, it results in a piece with a truly unique charm.
The finished piece
Slip it on as a single piece to complete an outfit suited for special occasions such as parties or anniversary dinners. With every movement, the cherry blossoms at the hem sway, and the gold leaf shines quietly against the black ground.
